JOSEPH (JOE) P. GONZALES
Colonel(R) U.S. Army
Medical Service Corps

 

Colonel Gonzales retired with 29+ years of distinguished military service in October 1999, as Chief of Staff, Brooke Army Medical Center, FT Sam Houston, TX.

He was born in San Antonio to Albert and Odilia Gonzales. He earned a B.A. degree in Biology, was recognized as a Distinguished Military Graduate, and received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Army, Medical Service Corps (MSC), from the University of Texas at Austin, May 1970.

Colonel Gonzales' assignments have taken him throughout the United States, Central and South America, Korea, Japan, and Egypt. As a military advisor with XVIII Airborne Corps, he helped establish the Medical Service Corps and a medical battalion for the Army of El Salvador. As commander of the 16th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH), his unit provided medical support to an engineer task force and civic action projects in Bolivia.

Colonel Gonzales was selected to be the first MSC officer to serve as an ROTC commander and Professor of Military Science for the Army ROTC programs at UTSA and Trinity University, San Antonio, TX, from 1992-1994. In 1993, Colonel Gonzales served as Commandant of Cadets at Army ROTC Advanced Camp, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Colonel Gonzales has a Masters in Hospital Administration (MHA) from Baylor

University, and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.

His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service Medal (6 OLC).Additionally, he earned the Expert Field Medical Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, HALO Badge,  Air Assault Badge, Special Forces Tab, and he is the recipient of the Order of Military Medical Merit.

He continued his profession as a hospital administrator as the CEO at Hendry Regional Medical Center in Clewiston, Florida, from 1999 until 2002.  After his return to San Antonio he started to work as a Senior Consultant in Healthcare with BearingPoint (his current employer).

Colonel Gonzales is married to the former, Josie Garner. They have two children, both grown and married, and two grandchildren.
